At the end of December 2007, Project: LEARN had to reevaluate how we raised funds to provide necessary services to students. With the difficult economy, the need for our services had increased, even though budgets were being cut back drastically. The future of Project: LEARN was in jeopardy. Project: LEARN had to find a revenue stream that would:
- Relate to our mission of adult tutoring and increasing literacy;
- Be managed primarily by volunteers;
- Be started on a shoestring budget; and
- Not negatively impact other non-profit organizations in Medina County.
With all of these goals in mind, Linda Smalley, former Executive Director of Project: LEARN, began to formulate plans for a used bookstore. In August, 2008, Project: LEARN’s The BookShelf, a gently used retail bookstore and tutoring center in Medina, was born! Through the efforts of dedicated volunteers and staff, The BookShelf became a huge success. With such positive results from the Medina store, a decision was made to open a second location. On March 1st, 2010 we opened our second BookShelf and tutoring center location in Brunswick. In order to be of service to even more of Medina County, a Wadsworth BookShelf and tutoring center was opened on July 1, 2011.
Each store has its own character and special sections. Medina tends to carry more mysteries, thrillers, and books on CD. Wadsworth specializes in antiquarian books and has a very well organized religion/inspirational section. Brunswick has the most floor space and the most sections of books, including a wide variety of romance novels and a special shelf dedicated to autographed books.
At this time, The BookShelf stores are the only bookstores in Medina County. We are proud to serve as a resource for quality books at low prices for everyone in Medina County. We have customers who come to visit us from all over Northeast Ohio! To keep informed about our special sales and frequent buyer programs, please sign up for our electronic newsletters at the link to the right.
At every store you will find a dedicated staff of volunteers ready to help you find a book you will enjoy. We happily take requests for books, and move requested books from one store to another for customer convenience. Call us anytime to see if we have what you need!
As a convenience for families, The BookShelf makes a special effort to stock titles on school required reading lists in local districts. We order new copies of these titles for your convenience, and move used titles to the location nearest the district. Call us anytime to see if we have the titles you need.
We accept donations of good quality used books at all three BookShelf locations. We do not accept encyclopedias, computer books/medical books/business books older than 5 years, condensed books, or magazines, but other books of all kinds in good condition are gratefully accepted. We ask that you donate books during our open hours only (Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm; Saturdays, 10am-4pm); books left outside our stores may be a safety hazard or be damaged by the weather. **New in 2016: we will happily accept your textbooks as a donation.** Project: LEARN is a 501(c)(3) charity and we will happily provide a tax receipt documenting your book donation.
