Brunswick, OH—Project: LEARN is partnering for the fourth year with the Brunswick Library and staff from Brunswick City Schools to offer Brunswick R.O.C.K.S. to families with children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall. R.O.C.K.S. stands for Reading Opportunities Create Kindergarten Success. Funded primarily through United Way of Medina County, the program will show parents and their children simple, fun activities they can do together at home so children will be better prepared for going to kindergarten. Registration for the program opens March 1st.
The three sessions will be held at Brunswick Library on Thursday evenings: June 26, July 10, and July 24 from 6 – 8pm. The three sessions introduce parents to activities that build readiness skills such as phonemic awareness, alphabetic knowledge, rhyming, story comprehension, and pre-writing. Katie Lehky, kindergarten teacher from Crestview, developed activities which are great foundation builders for children entering kindergarten. Ms. Lehky, former Memorial School principal Ms. Judy Galo, and other professional educators will work with parents and children covering 4-5 skills each session.
Brunswick R.O.C.K.S. will also host a Family Literacy Night on Thursday, September 25th at Brunswick Library from 6-8pm. Families can enjoy games, music, reading, and activities that celebrate books and reading.
Parental help and involvement in their child’s education is more important than ever. With the mandate that children must pass the third grade reading test to move on to fourth grade, children need to begin school with some skills in place. The pace of the curriculum must accelerate in order to prepare children to move ahead. Brunswick R.O.C.K.S. helps parents learn activities they can do at home that will help their children succeed in this new accelerated environment.
Parents may register their family for Brunswick R.O.C.K.S. at the Brunswick Library in the Children’s Department. Families may also register by calling (330) 273-4150 extension 2150 or by e-mailing BrunswickROCKS@yahoo.com. This program is free and babysitting for siblings is available.
Project: LEARN thanks the United Way of Medina County, Brunswick Library, Brunswick Educational Foundation, and the Brunswick City Schools for their support of Brunswick R.O.C.K.S.
Project: LEARN is a nonprofit organization that enhances lives and strengthens communities by helping adults improve fundamental skills in reading, problem-solving and the English language. Our volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring to adults, ages 18 and over. We believe literacy is a family value and children place a value on reading and education if they see it demonstrated at home. We are a community-based organization funded by United Way, individual donors, and our three used bookstores in Brunswick, Medina, and Wadsworth. For more information about Project: LEARN’s services, call 330-723-1314.
