Are you ready for the Match Wits Challenge?  Are you and your friends prepared to do battle to become the Team Trivia Champions of Medina County?  Project: LEARN is thrilled to be hosting our 6th annual Match Wits competition on Thursday, April 21st, from 6pm-8:30pm at Coppertop at Cherokee Hills in Valley City.

Teams of up to 8 participants compete simultaneously, answering questions in eight unique categories.  The room can get a bit raucous, as teams cheer correct answers and boo when they are wrong. Is your team worried about answering questions in a particular category?  We will have “Gurus,” subject-matter experts, on hand for every category…and your team can buy tickets to win their services for those difficult questions.  Also, we are creating fabulous themed baskets for each category, also winnable via ticket auction.

It’s a fun, no-stress evening (no one is up on stage–and with 8 team members, someone is likely to have the answer at your table even if you don’t!), so reserve your table now!

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Medina County Auditor Mike Kovack as our Quizmaster this year!  Mike has been our guest as a player, and will now step up to ask the questions for this year’s game!

The registration form is found by clicking here:  Match Wits official registration form 2016

Tickets are $40 each, or a table of 8 is $320.  Corporate sponsorships are available; contact us at 330-723-1314 or projectlearn.medina@gmail.com for more information.

We would like to thank Erick Schultz of Antiquation for the beautiful one-of-a-kind trophies that will be presented to the members of the winning team!  We thank our other corporate and organization sponsors as well:  The Post Newspapers, Medina Sunrise Rotary, and Bill Doraty Kia.

A gift basket of books and related items for each category will be on ticket auction that evening.  We have wonderful items for our guests to win, including a Samsung tablet computer!

Presenting our Guru Guest List–the wonderful community members who will be assisting us as subject matter experts this year:

Cleveland TV Trivia:  Did you grow up watching Wilma Smith and Dorothy Fuldheim?  Watch Big Chuck and Lil John on the late night movie show?  We have TWO experts coming to assist teams with this category.  Mike and Janice Olszewski have written two books about Cleveland television.  Mike is a veteran Cleveland radio personality and the curator and archivist for the Ohio Broadcast Archive and Museum.  He also teaches media and communications classes for several local universities.  Janice, an accomplished photographer, has more than three decades of experience in the tourism and travel business.  Their books, Cleveland TV Tales and Cleveland TV Tales, Volume 2, are available for sale at our BookShelf Bookstores–and they will be selling copies at Match Wits!

Breakfast Cereals Martin Gitlin is a freelance writer who’s written more than 40 books, including The Great American Cereal Book:  How Breakfast Got Its Crunch, and he lives right here in Northeast Ohio.  The winner of several awards for excellence in journalism, his lifelong love of cereal will be on display at Match Wits.  (Just wait until you see the basket we’ve got cooked up for this category!)

Herbs and Herbal Remedies:  Local herbalist and Reiki Master Linda Trenta will be joining us to share her expertise in using natural foods for health.  Her business, The Garden Variety, produces talcs and salves made from wholesome, organic ingredients that help users treat medical issues in concert with traditional medicine.  She conducts training and information sessions throughout the area, so she will be a terrific expert to have on hand as our Herbs Guru!  Visit her Etsy store here.

Star Wars:    Long-time collector and Star Wars enthusiast David Brown will be joining us as our Star Wars expert.  David is the president of the Ohio Star Wars Collectors Club–you may have seen his basement filled with Star Wars and other collectibles featured in local media this fall, or heard him on Cleveland NPR’s The Sound of Ideas, talking about all things Star Wars.  We are delighted to have him as our Star Wars Guru for Match Wits this year!

Music About Space:  Following on the heels of our Star Wars category, we are combining the special interests of our next guru to create a category as unique as he is:  Tom Stugmyer, morning drive DJ on Wadsworth Community Radio, 97.1 FM.  Tom and his morning drive partner Tina Heiberg have a fabulous time every morning on the radio–you should be listening on the radio or on line!  Tom is a huge astronomy buff as well as a DJ, so this category will feature music referencing space.

WINE!  We are thrilled that Kristin Girard of the new The Vine & Hop Shop in Brunswick will be joining us as our Wine Guru this year.  The new shop specializes in assisting local winemakers and beer brewers with all the supplies they need to manufacture their own wine and beer at home.  Visit their website at VineNHop.com.

(We will have a Literature category this year–we are, after all, a literacy organization–but there will be no guru available for this category.  Bring your most literate pals to Match Wits!)
